Whole tone scales use an entire tone between every note. There are really only two different whole tone scales, one that has a “C” in it and one that has a C# in it…. that is it, every note is contained in these two scales. The only triads that can be made from whole tone scale notes are augmented. Major 3rd stacked on a major 3rd. I found using only a whole tone scales for a composition to be quite challenging. On my first attempt I decided to concentrate on interwoven single note lines because I found augmented chords a bit “heavy”.

Above is the guitar fingering for the “C” whole tone scale.
Why not give it a try? Here is a whole tone (in “C” ) backing track.
